An Athlete's Story

Loretta Dobbins"I did not enjoy school very much because kids were often mean to me.  It was not uncommon for them to call me names and make fun of me.

It really hurt my feelings and I couldn't understand why.  One time, when I was in middle school, a girl beat me up.  The principal asked me to look at school pictures and point out the girl who hurt me.  Sometimes I wonder where that girl is now and if she ever thinks of how hurtful she was.  I want to think in my heart she is sorry for what she did and now as an adult understands that people with intellectual disabilities are just like everyone else. Needless to say, school did not help me with my self-esteem.  But my world was about to change when my mom heard about Special Olympics.  Soon people were calling me things like, Champion, Athlete and Hero.  It made me feel really good about myself and I've been a Special Olympics athlete ever since."  My name is Loretta.
