Healthy Athlete Program Offered at Regional Floor Hockey Competition

Healthy Athletes is an important health education program provided by Special Olympics Northern California. The Healthy Athletes Program was offered this month at our Regional Floor Hockey competition.  Healthy Athletes focused on the Fit Feet and Strong Minds components.

The students from Samuel Merritt University School of Podiatric Medicine volunteers at Fit Feet to examine and educate athletes about how to care for their feet. It's a great opportunity to make sure that shoes are fitting correctly and to determine if orthotics are needed.  Once done with Fit Feet, athletes headed over to Strong Minds.

Strong Minds is a new component of our Healthy Athletes Program.  The Strong Minds program helps athletes strengthen their coping skills.  The program promotes thinking positive thoughts and practicing calming routines during a competition.  We welcomed Morning Crane Healing Art Center to the Special Olympics Northern California Healthy Athletes program. Morning Crane Healing Art Center and volunteers worked with athletes on breathing exercises, stretching and ways to reduce anxiety before a competition.

Educating athletes about how to take care of their health is an important part of our mission here at Special Olympics Northern California.  We are thankful to have partners in the community such as Samuel Merritt University School of Podiatry and Morning Crane Healing Art Center helping our athletes keep their minds strong and their feet fit.
