Athlete Leaders from Special Olympics Northern California (SONC) joined their peers from Special Olympics Southern California to meet in-person and virtually with legislators from April 10-11 as a part of our annual Capitol Day in Sacramento.
Capitol Day is an opportunity for SONC Athlete Leaders and staff to meet with members of the State Assembly and Senate. Athlete Leaders shared their personal Special Olympics stories and explained the life-changing impacts of our programs. This year, we also thanked the State for including Special Olympics funding in the 2022-2023 Budget. This funding is crucial to continue and expand our inclusive programs in sports, schools, health and leadership.
Eleven Athlete Leaders served as ambassadors for SONC in 34 meetings with legislators. Great job to Edison, Sophia, Faaris, Wyatt, Haley, Jennifer, Jonathan, Jason, Daniel, Lindsey and Dashiell! Capitol Day wrapped up with special recognitions in the Senate and Assembly Chambers, including a proclamation of “Special Olympics Day” on the Assembly Floor with Assemblymember Tim Grayson and Assemblymember Tom Lackey.
Congrats to all of our Athlete Leader ambassadors, and thank you to the State of California for supporting Special Olympics!
