Torch Run and Relay
The Law Enforcement Torch Run® kicks off on June 22, 2009 when hundreds of law enforcement personnel throughout Northern California will escort the Special Olympics Torch, the Flame of Hope™ to the 2009 Special Olympics Northern California Summer Games at UC Davis.
Starting at various points in Northern California, the torch will be run along highways and city streets by law enforcement personnel. The Flame of Hope™ will arrive on the steps of the State Capital in Sacramento on June 26, before continuing on to UC Davis Campus for the Summer Games Opening Ceremonies.

What is the Law Enforcement Torch Run®?
The Law Enforcement Torch Run is the largest global grass-roots fundraiser and public awareness vehicle, raising more than $34 million world wide to benefit Special Olympics athletes. The Torch Run is an actual running event in which officers and athletes run the Flame of Hope™ to the Opening Ceremony of Special Olympics competitions. In Northern California, law enforcement personnel earn the honor of running the torch through their communities on its journey to Summer Games by raising funds for Special Olympics throughout the year.
But the Law Enforcement Torch Run® is also much more. It is a year-round initiative that includes a variety of fundraising campaigns and special events such as Tip-A-Cops™, golf tournaments, T-shirt and merchandise sales, polar plunges, billboard sits or other events that have local appeal.
How many law enforcement personnel will participate in the Summer Games Torch Run?
We estimate that nearly 500 personnel from dozens of law enforcement agencies will participate in this year’s Torch Relay.
What is the impact of the Law Enforcement Torch Run in Northern California?
More than 3,500 law enforcement personnel participate year-round in the Law Enforcement Fundraising efforts throughout Northern California. Their impact is significant - in 2008, their efforts raised more than $850,000 for Special Olympics.
