Becoming A Donor

While Special Olympics has worked to improve the lives of thousands of Northern California athletes through its year-round sports training and competition, the movement has touched less than one percent of the more than one million people with developmental disabilities here in Northern California.

As Special Olympics does not charge its athletes to train and compete in its activities, it becomes a challenge to provide every person with developmental disabilities a chance to benefit from Special Olympics. There are a number of ways you can help make this happen. Donations can be made through gifts of cash, stock, or estate planning.

OUR GOAL

Help 1,000 athletes receive opportunities to train and compete during the 2009-2010 season.

• Raise $250 to support an athlete’s training and competition for six months OR
• Raise $500 to support an athlete’s training and competition for one year.

WHY
Special Olympics is free to our athletes and families but we need your help – we need more fans. Special Olympic athletes are more likely to live independently, hold a job, participate in community activities and develop close friendships. In Northern California, more than 13,000 athletes train and compete year-round in 15 Olympic sports.

With your help we can reach many more people with developmental disabilities. Your tax deductible gift will help change lives. Sponsor an athlete today!

Planned Giving
Making charitable contributions is an art - a creative process that adapts to the changing needs and wishes of the donor. Planned giving enables a donor to arrange charitable contributions in ways that maximize his or her personal objectives while minimizing after-tax cost.

Depending on the assets and the gift arrangement selected, a donor can expect to obtain some or all of the following benefits:

  • Fulfill philanthropic goals
  • Reduce income tax through a deduction for the gift
  • Avoid capital gain tax on gifts of long-term appreciated property
  • Retain a stream of payments for life for the donor and other beneficiaries
  • Increase disposable income
  • Eliminate federal estate tax on property passing to charity upon donor's death
  • Reduce cost and time in estate settlement
