Special
Olympics Northern & Southern California provides year round
sports training and competition opportunities for over 26,000
children and adults with developmental disabilities through school
and community based programming. These programs are provided
FREE of charge to all its participants. Through Special Olympics,
the athletes develop physical fitness; gain confidence in their
own abilities and demonstrate courage through their perseverance
to succeed. As athletes gain new skills on the playing field
and they become more active and involved in sports, their health
and fitness continues to benefit. The impact of Special Olympics
is the health and fitness of our athletes.
Since Special Olympics provides this programming for free to
all of its participants, individual and corporate funding is
crucial. Since 2006, Wal*Mart California (Region 19) and Special
Olympics have joined together to create "A Golden Partnership" which
has raised more than $1,350,000 for the athletes of Special Olympics.
This Golden Partnership has helped more than 2,700 athletes receive
the benefits of health and fitness through sports in their local
communities where Wal*Mart exists. In 2008, the goal of this partnership
is to raise $1 million additional dollars to support 2,000 additional
athletes.
