Our families play a critical role in the continued success and growth of Special Olympics Northern California. Families are volunteers, coaches, fundraisers, speakers, but most importantly, they are a constant source of support and encouragement for their athlete. Families know first hand the remarkable difference Special Olympics makes in the lives of their athletes. Families know that Special Olympics gives athletes the self-assurance and belief in their abilities so that they can become an intricate part of their community whether that is at home, at school or in the workplace.

Over 13,000 Special Olympics athletes participate in our year round sports training and competition opportunities for free. Meet some of them here.
In 2010 we are still facing challenges. As more and more social service agencies are closing their doors or limiting their services, families are turning to us, and the number of participants joining Special Olympics continues to rise. Yet some of our funding resources, particularly in the corporate arena, are not.
In order to provide the best possible service to the majority of our athletes, we have had to make some additional changes to our Sports Program. Most notably is that regional competitions will now be one day events with the exception of Summer Games which will continue to be two days. This will eliminate the need to house many teams but still provide a good competition experience for the athletes. It may also open up the opportunity for athletes who may not be able to handle an overnight stay, the chance to compete.
To learn more about the planned changes, please read the attached “2010 President Message” from our President and CEO, Rick Collett.
