Special Olympics Northern
California holds nine program championships every year. These
events are the culmination of an athlete's training and competition
cycle. In order to compete in a program championship, an athlete
must have qualified at the local and regional levels.
April
27, 2008
One of our most popular sports, March madness comes to Stockton
a month later as 52 teams gather for the SONC Spring Hoops Championship
held each April.
Teams compete in five different divisions. There is also a large
number of individual skills competitors participating in the
hoops classic.
June
6-8, 2008 Berkeley
The weekend of June 6th, nearly 1,000 Special Olympics athletes
from Northern California will compete in: aquatics, athletics
(track & field),
bocce, tennis and volleyball.
Competition for aquatics, athletics, tennis and volleyball, will take place
on the University of California, Berkeley campus. Competition for bocce will
take place at Martinez Waterfront Park.
On Friday evening, June 6th, preceding the competition on Saturday
and Sunday, there will be an inspiring Opening Ceremonies in
the beautiful Haas Pavilion. The Opening will include our traditional
parade of athletes and the lighting of the Special Olympics Caldron,
signaling the beginning of the games. Over 1,200 athletes and
coaches will be housed in the University of California, Berkeley
dorms over the weekend.
The public is invited and there are no fees for admission to
any of the events.

Family Housing
Family Housing has been secured at the Double Tree Berkeley Marina
at a rate of $102.00 a night including breakfast. Families can
make their reservations by calling 510-548-7920 and say they are
with the Special Olympics group.
August
25, 2008, Boundary Oaks Golf Course, Walnut Creek
One of the fastest growing sports in Special Olympics, our annual
golf championship showcases the finest golfers SONC has to offer.
Golfers gather for a day of low gross and skills competition.
Held in early August, stamina is always a factor and mental toughness
a big component of this competition. We expect a full field of
144 golfers.
September
6, 2008
Our Championship is held in September and draws 40 teams from
all over Northern California who compete in five different divisions
based on level of playing ability. Also participating are 48
individual skills athletes who compete and perform a series of
softball skills tests designed to measure their skills against
athletes of equal ability. On Saturday night everyone looks forward
to the coaches versus SONC staff softball challenge.
November
1, 2008 Gibson Ranch, Sacramento
Over 100 athletes from all over Northern California who will
compete in long distance race walking or long distance running.
The distances for the walking events are either a 1500 meter
or 3k walk and the running distance are 3k, 5k, or 10k run. The
athletes have trained long and hard for this opportunity to compete
by first participating in a community race in order to qualify
for the Championships.
November
1, 2008 Cherry Island Soccer, Complex, Sacramento
Over 40 soccer teams from throughout Northern California will
come together in Sacramento for an exciting day of competition.
The beautiful Cherry Island Soccer Complex will once again be
the site of the Competition. The teams competing at the Championships
have earned their spot by competing at one of two Regional Qualifiers
which were held earlier in the season and by participating in
a rigorous training season prior to competing.

Over 75 athletes from all over Northern California who will compete
in the Power Lifting Championship. The athletes will compete
in Dead Lift and Bench Press. The event is very inspiring as
the athletes lift weights more than twice their body weight.
The athletes have trained long and hard for this opportunity
to compete by first participating in a regional qualifying
event in El Dorado or San Jose in order to qualify for the
Championships.
February
3, 2008 Sacramento
The city of Sacramento hosts the 2008 Special Olympics Northern
California Floor Hockey Championships when teams throughout Northern
California gather at Cal Expo to compete.
A great team sport, 24 teams from four levels of play compete
against one another for a full day of action. Stamina plays a
key role as the action is fast and furious!
Over 200 athletes from throughout Northern California came together for an exciting
week of competition. Athletes competed in (4) different sports: Cross Country
Skiing, Snow Shoeing, Alpine Skiing, and Snow Boarding. The majestic Kirkwood
Mountain Resort was once again the site of the Competition. The athletes who
competed at Winter Games earned their spot by competing at one of three Regional
Qualifiers which were held earlier in the season and by participating in a rigorous
training season prior to competing.
