Athletic training and
competition gives people with developmental disabilities
the chance to demonstrate to the world all they are capable
of achieving.
Special Olympics Northern
California holds nine program championships every year. These
events are the culmination of an athlete's training and competition
cycle.
In July 2006, 3,500 athletes
from all over North America headed to Ames Iowa for the first
Special Olympics North America Summer Games. The Games took
place from July 1 through July 8 and offered competition
opportunities in aquatics, basketball, bocce, bowling, golf,
gymnastics, tennis, track & field, soccer, and volleyball.
Special Olympics Northern California took 62 athletes who
competed in aquatics, basketball, bocce, bowling, golf, tennis
or track & field. The athletes were accompanied to the
Games by 20 coaches and came back from the games with many,
many medals and ribbons. Congratulations to our athletes!
