U.C. Davis Campus - June 26th – 28th, 2009
The weekend of June 26, over 850 Special Olympics athletes descended on the UC Davis campus for a weekend of competition. The weekend began with an inspiring Opening Ceremonies on Friday evening highlighted by the dramatic entrance of the Flame of Hope escorted by Law Enforcement to light the Special Olympics caldron signaling the beginning of the Games. Athletes competed in aquatics, tennis or track & field on the UC Davis campus or Bocce at the Martinez Waterfront Park on Saturday and Sunday.
Friday after the Opening, Law Enforcement personnel renewed old friendships and made new ones at the Law Enforcement Reception hosted by the Northern California Torch Run Executive Committee. Saturday and Sunday the Law Enforcement community came out in force from all over Northern California to present awards to the Special Olympics athletes who competed over the weekend.
The Law Enforcement Torch Run® kicked off on June 22, 2009 when hundreds of law enforcement personnel throughout Northern California escortedt the Special Olympics Torch, the “Flame of Hope” on its way to the 2009 Special Olympics Northern California Summer Games at UC Davis. Starting at various points in Northern California, the torch was relayed along highways and city streets by Law Enforcement personnel. Arriving at the State Capital on June 26th a press conference was held on the steps of the Capital building with opening remarks by the Governor of California, before the Flame of Hope continued to the UC Davis Campus for the Opening Ceremonies of the Summer Games.
The Law Enforcement Torch Run® is the largest global grass-roots fundraiser and public awareness campaign for Special Olympics. In 2008 the world wide Law Enforcement fundraising efforts raised over $38 million dollars for the benefit of Special Olympics athletes. In Northern California over 3,500 Law Enforcement personnel participate in the Law Enforcement Fundraising efforts and raised over $850,000 in 2008 for Special Olympics Northern California.
Our Law Enforcement personnel host fundraising events all year round to raise
money for Special Olympics Northern California. Tip-a-Cops at local restaurants,
billboard sits, poker tournaments and motorcycle rides and our newest signature event, the Polar Plunge are just a few of the
ways they raise funds. Check out our Torch Run events to find out how you can
support our Law Enforcement's fundraising efforts. Events are added all year
long, so check back often!
