The Law Enforcement Torch Run kicks off on May 30, 2008 at the
State Capitol Building at 10 a.m. Throughout the week of June 1, the "Flame of Hope" will travel hundreds of miles  throughout
Northern California arriving at Berkeley on Friday, June 6 for
Summer Games. Every officer running the torch earned the right
to be a "Guardian of the Flame" by raising funds and awareness
for Special Olympics Northern California. The Law Enforcement
Torch Run® for Special Olympics is the movement's largest
grass-roots fundraiser and public awareness vehicle.
The Olympic Flame and torch is a symbol of the Olympic Games commemorating
the theft of fire from the Greek God Zeus by Prometheus. Its' origins
lie in ancient Greece, when a fire was kept burning through the
celebration of the ancient Olympics. The flame is carried by relay
all the way to its final destination. Although it is usually carried
by runners on foot, other modes of transport also are used. All
along its route, the flame heralds the upcoming Olympic Games and
transmits a message of peace and friendship amongst people.
The
Special Olympics flame is referred to as the "Flame of Hope" and
is a symbol of acceptance and diversity among people. It heralds
the upcoming Special Olympic Games. The "Flame of Hope" Torch Relay ends on the day of opening ceremony. The final bearer of
the torch runs towards the caldron and uses the torch to start
the flame in the stadium. It is considered a great honor to light
the Olympic Flame. After being lit, the flame continues to burn
throughout the celebration of the Special Olympics until it is
extinguished at the end of the closing ceremony of the Games.
